A Tithe To Haiti
January 12th, 2010 was a day of devastation for Haiti as a 7.0 magnitude earthquake destroyed 105,000 homes. Over one million people were left homeless and more than 200,000 died. Since then, Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) has helped rebuild Haiti. More than 55,000 families were afforded the opportunity of a new place to live. Now, Hurricane Matthew, a category four hurricane, has also taken homes.
It has left Haiti, once more, in need of support and housing.
In addition to the sheer force of devastation caused by sustained winds of 145 mph, flash floods and mudslides have compounded the loss of life and damage to infrastructure still being redeveloped following the 2010 earthquake and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. As the hurricane subsides and the winds calm, there is significant concern that standing water could lead to another cholera outbreak, which claimed more than 10,000 lives after the earthquake.
Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley (HFHMV) is prepared to help Haiti, as Director Monica Craven did when she visited Haiti in 2012. Amazingly, HFHMV has already made an unexpected contribution.
On Sunday, October 2nd, 2016, just days before Hurricane Matthew struck, HFHMV held a house dedication for Janine DiPaolo. Not only was this a celebration for Janine, but it was another opportunity to build. With each home built in the Mahoning Valley, HFHMV tithes – or gives to Habitat affiliates abroad – a home. The tithe is one way in which HFHI continues its mission to provide decent, affordable housing in areas that are fighting poverty and homelessness. Janine selected Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, for the tithe from her home.
For a country that continues to house people in FEMA tents from previous disasters, a tithe could not have been given at a more appropriate time – a time when the support of people from around the world is needed in Haiti. Today, Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley is standing-by ready to help HFHI rebuild Haiti once more.
