Habitat's New Home Build

5/7/2024

The shovels were readied as Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley prepared to break ground on a new Habitat house on May 10, 2024 at 1589 Southeast Blvd. in Salem. The groundbreaking ceremony for the future home of the Calderone family started at 12:00PM. Some of the expected speakers include David Redig, Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley Executive Director, Salem Mayor, Cyndi Dickey, and our future Habitat homeowners.

The Salem house will be the home of the Calderone family, who recently qualified into the Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley homeownership program earlier this year. The Calderones will receive an affordable mortgage through Habitat with a 0% interest rate.

“This house isn’t free. We’re providing this family a hand-up so they can accomplish the dream of affordable homeownership,” said Habitat Executive Director, David Redig. “Along with the financial education and homeowner classes, the Calderones will put their own time and hard work into the home, working alongside volunteers to make this home truly their own.”

The Salem house will be built using structurally insulated panels (SIPs), a first for the Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley affiliate. This construction method will allow for the home to be extremely energy efficient and allow the homeowner substantial cost savings for years to come. “This is a new way of building for us and our construction team is very excited,” said Redig.

If any volunteers are interested in participating in the Salem build, they can contact Habitat for Humanity at (330) 743-7244 or visit habitatmahoning.org. The home is scheduled to be completed this Fall.
